Why Geometry Rocks (and Algebra… Well, Doesn’t Always)

OK, OK….lets not start a war here. Algebra has its moments. The thing is geometry is just so much more interesting to me. It’s math, but it is also “math the rebel sibling”, who defied tradition and coloring all that we know ourselves with (sometimes literally) out of line.

How Geometry Is The Coolest Kid On the Math Block

Visual: No more abstracted equations, or infinite variables. Geometry *Shapes, angles and lines* These are physical things that you can see or touch. Triangles and circles, who needs ‘x’ and ‘y’ juice?

We learn through visuals: Remember when you played with blocks as a kid? That’s sort of how geometry works, only with protractors and compasses instead of Legos. Math becomes a drawing, measuring and construction job: Art with your math.

It is all around us: Literally look up. So why would the creators of our universe work with anything other than geometrical shapes? From the square monitor displaying this text to the globe!

So, the next time you’re struggling with a tricky algebra problem, take a break and explore the world of geometry. You might just find yourself falling in love with math all over again!

  2. You’re so right. My dad is a maths tutor with a long career teaching in schools. He always felt that schools stick too close to the curriculum and end up missing exactly what makes maths so interesting.

I remember the talks about how statistics is used to lie, the beauty of the Fibbonacci spiral and how that ancient Greek nerd calculated the circumference of the earth and actually got pretty close!

As for geometry, another way it’s used is in marketing: how businesses use geometry to direct the eye exactly where they want you to look.
